William Toone

William Toone is the Executive Director of the ECOLIFE Foundation. A career biologist, Bill was originally active in single species conservation programs for flagship species such as the California condor. He managed conservation programs for the Zoological Society of San Diego for over twenty years. Having worked in many countries around the world Bill was always interested in the human factor associated with conservation issues. His interest in seeing social justice achieved in conservation led to the founding of the ECOLIFE Foundation. A significant focus of the ECOLIFE Foundation is forest management in the state of Michoacán, Mexico where many of the North American monarch butterflies spend the winter. Believing that sustainability occurs at the nexus of environment, economics and social justice we are anxious to address the challenge of bringing benefits of the emerging carbon market to the Indigenous communities that rely upon the forests of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.
